Non-pure abjads such as Hebrew and Arabic script and abugidas use diacritics for denoting vowels. Hebrew and Arabic also indicate consonant doubling and change with diacritics; Hebrew and Devanagari use them for foreign sounds. Devanagari and related abugidas also use a diacritical mark called a virama to mark the absence of a vowel. Unified Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics use several types of diacritics, including the diacritics with alphabetic properties known as Medials and Finals.
Although long vowels originally were indicated with a negative line through the Syllabic glyphs, making the glyph appear broken, in the modern forms, a dot above is used to indicate vowel length. In some of the styles, a ring above indicates a long vowel with a [j] off-glide. Medials such as the “w-dot” placed next to the Syllabics glyph indicates a [w] being placed between the syllable onset consonant and the nucleus vowel.
Finals indicate the syllable coda consonant; some of the syllable coda consonants in word medial positions, such as with the “h-tick”, indicate the fortification of the consonant in the syllable following it. Emoticons are commonly created with diacritic symbols, especially Japanese emoticons on popular imageboards. Alphabetization or collation[ edit ] Main article:
In the very first issue of Action Comics 1 — the comic book that began the saga of Superman — the feature story included an episode where three gangsters kidnap a woman later known as Lois Lane as she is traveling home from a nightclub in a taxi. Clark Kent and Lois were dancing at the nightclub when one of the gangster’s, Butch, smugly tries to cut in, but Lois refuses.
Kent tries to stand up to Butch but gets nowhere. Later, after Butch and his goons have kidnapped Lois no doubt planning to take her to a remote location to brutally beat and rape her , Butch arrogantly hopes that Kent will come after him The confrontation leads to Superman catching and easily picking up their car, shaking it violently so that the bad guys fall out and then, after securing Lois’ safety, vaulting the now scared-out-of-his-wits Butch onto a telephone wire to await the authorities.
In For the Man Who Has Everything , Superman has been trapped by an alien plant that gives him a hallucination of the happy ending he would have wanted — living on Krypton, which was never destroyed.

An underground soul favorite who recorded a string of obscure singles in the 70s for Shiptown, which operated from a record store in Norfolk, Virginia. Label owner Noah Biggs worked with Charles Hunter and local star Lenis Guess to create some distinctive tracks which eventually earned belated international acclaim for Barbara. Just about anyone with talent was welcome to call by at Shiptown Records, which was based out of the Nimrod Record Store at Church Street. The owner, Noah Biggs, was a man with good business acumen and a sharp sense of fashion.
The city developed around its waterfront where naval bases, shipyards, docks, warehouses and railroad yards grew up. Church Street, being situated just inland from the Elizabeth River waterfront was ideally located and it became the street where blacks in particular headed to enjoy themselves. American comedian, Tim Reed, spent many of his formative years living in or around Church Street.
He remembers it as a bustling narrow thoroughfare lined with wooden framed three storey buildings. By the mid fifties, a street gang by the name of the Corner Boys stalked the junctions of the area. At night, lots of drunken sailors would stagger down the street and members of the Corner Boys took great delight in relieving them of their wallets or engaging in other acts of petty theft. Teenage boys were expected to join the gang and it was all too easy for them to slip into a life of crime, only the church or school was there to lift them above the fray.
As time progressed, the character of the street changed, as the buildings on one side of the road were demolished to allow the highway to be widened.

I may well have. How about the best reggae band in all of California? In all the USA? Okay, there’s no denying I overstepped with that last one, but make no mistake- these guys are bloody damn good. They play like peak-era Roots Radics or Soul Syndicate and sing like an Americanized version of the sweetest Jamaican harmony group you’d care to name. Their two albums of original material, which should be on every respectable reggae lover’s shelf, are thought-provoking, hip-swaying stuff that never gets stale, and their now-twofold output of reggae and rocksteady cover versions shows just how well they’ve learned from, and yes, expanded upon, the sound of the masters that influenced them.
