Bedford, UK I’d be interested to hear some opinions on my dilemma. I have a new Grandson and want to buy a “special” guitar, for me to enjoy at home for a few years then pass down to him. Even if he doesn’t play he will hopefully have something worth some reasonable dosh in 20 years time. I was originally thinking about an old Gibson from my birth year, but from doing some more research I am worried about the integrity of the glues and finish. Plus I was born in the war years so manufacturing was done with available materials at the time.
So then to Plan B, a nice guitar from his Mum’s birthyear, I was originally thinking Les Paul Custom because the dating mechanism used by Gibson can pinpoint the exact date, in this case 21st April. I thought that would be lovely! I do feel that that will be a long and difficult search though!

After his return from the Army in , and modifications to his own, he would be seen in several more movies made for Paramount and promotional shots for others with one identical to the earlier films.
In King Creole, the finish on the J used appears slightly dull as if oversprayed and by though, the Paramount guitar had a heavy overspray on the body and neck that was likely applied to facilitate filming by reducing hotspots and minimizing glare. A first-year issue L-C, with simply breathtaking looks, astounding tone, and perfect playability. Pearloid, and all celluloid products, were still quite new and exciting at that time, and Gibson designed the Century models to showcase their use of the plastic. The fingerboard, headstock, bindings, tuner buttons, pickguard, and bridgepins are all made of Celluloid of one pattern or another. So, to love this guitar, you need to love Celluloid first Apart from the obvious, the guitar features back and sides of figured maple and a spruce top.
The lacquer finish is exquisitely sunbursted on all sides, and has developed a uniform and gracefully crazed patina.

Shares Our Verdict Any guitar that brings the office to a standstill while its incumbents drool and swoon over it, is something special indeed. Pros Blues, fingerstyle, chords, arpeggios — all sound great on this new version of Gibson’s workhorse. Cons If your ideal dreadnought has ‘Martin’ on the headstock you might have issues, but apart from that Gibson’s dedicated acoustic facility lies tucked away amidst the mountains of Montana in a place called Bozeman – in fact, its address is very appropriately Orville Way, Bozeman.
Here, a small team of expert luthiers oversees production of the company’s acoustic range, and they’ve got a few tricks up their sleeves for Gibson’s success in the field of making guitars is, of course, legendary, but perhaps more of a focus tends to be placed on its electric guitars rather than the arguably more humble acoustics.
